Customer Survey Forthcoming

In order to help us determine what level of value (performance) that WUE delivers and where improvement may be needed, a customer survey is being sent to the purchasing agent at our valued customers. We are hopeful that we will receive a response to the thirteen questions listed.

Please don’t hesitate to share any comments or suggestions you may have on how we can better serve you.

Thanks to all of our customers for the continued business in 2009!

CT and PT Sales Increase

Western United experienced a substantial increase in the sales of CT’s & PT’s in 2009.  Many customers have been pleased with the high quality and enlarged product offering that General Electric (GE) offers in both low voltage and high voltage designs.  Additionally Durham offers excellent lead-times on low voltage units.  WUE also offers Kuhlman (now ABB) high voltage CT’s & PT’s.

3M—The Brand of Choice for High Voltage Splices and Terminators

3M’s business success has been accomplished due to their focus on being a product innovator.  They have continued to design, manufacture and market high quality, easy to install HV cable accessories both in pre-molded and cold shrink designs.

For 1/0 and 4/0 medium voltage cable, their pre-molded EPDM formulated splices are cable rated, tested to ANSI 404 requirements and designed to ensure a stable cable seal that will last the life of the cable.  Splices are available in both a standard design and a “cable repair” design.  Specify a 5400 series for 15kv and 5450 series for 25kv with suffixes to match conductor sizes.

3M remains the market leader for cable terminations by offering both a QT III and QT II type one-piece terminator.  The QT III provides for an improved design over the QT II and a faster, less operator dependent installation.  Specify a 7600 series terminator (a specific P/N for 15kv, 25kv applications for the correct conductor size is available from your WUE inside sales rep) for your applications.

PUPI Introduces New Tangent Arm

PUPI fiberglass crossarms have replaced the use of wood for most deadend applications.  Fiberglass is lighter, stronger, more dependable, longer lasting and less expensive than wood in deadend applications.  In tangent applications, fiberglass has been a more expensive choice (if only the initial cost is considered)  For those utilities focused on initial cost, PUPI now offers a new alternative to wood crossarms.  Their Series 22 cross-arms are available in 8’ and 10’ lengths, with optional fiberglass braces or with a center mount bracket and having the same dimensions (3 5/8 x 4 5/8) as wood arms.  The strength of the arms are comparable with wood while the weight is almost 50% less (20 lbs versus 38 lbs), and best of all the initial cost of the new cross-arm is comparable with wood.  The fiberglass braces (both light duty and heavy duty) are also an excellent substitute for wood braces.

Your WUE sales rep has a full presentation on the new arm and a 4’ sample.  The arm and braces have been submitted to RUS for approval.

Shunt Reactors May Be Needed By Your Coop

Coops in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, New Mexico and other states that have installed long runs of underground cable with very light loads on the cable may be experiencing leading power factor issues.  These higher voltages can cause damage to customer’s equipment on the system (i.e. motors etc.) as well as requiring more power than should be needed to meet the electrical demand (a possible place to conserve on power needs from the G & T).  The solution to correct the high capacitance on these long cable runs is to install shunt reactors.  Shunt reactors (installed in pole-mount transformer tanks or pad-mounted tanks) from 15 kvar to 500 kvar up to 28kv are available from Partner Technologies Inc.  The pad-mount units are available with an under oil load-break switch and BON fuse for ease of operation and protection.  Partner Technologies has a full staff of engineers that can help calculate the size shunt reactor required to “fix” your system problem.  Their pad-mount tanks accommodate existing elbows and can be portable (as the load grows, the unit can be placed in another location and replaced with a pad-mounted transformer).  Units meet all applicable ANSI test requirements.
