 THE POWER OF MEASUREMENT

The ability to measure and verify voltages, resistance, current, leading or lagging power factor, harmonics, current flow, etc. can be a benefit to your utility’s bottom line as well as boosting consumer and member satisfaction.  The use of more accurate and sophisticated  measuring devices has escalated in the past several years.  Several products that are an important part of every utility’s tool box include the following vendor’s products :

MEASURING PRODUCTS

SENSORLINK

NEW! Sensorlink Amcorder
UG (Underground Recording Ammeter) Hot stick applied device mounted on an underground elbow to read and record current readings every few minutes for 30+ days with a +1% accuracy.  Information is downloaded via USB port into a laptop computer.

Sensorlink Amcorder

Same as above except for overhead lines and recording average readings every 15 minutes for 30+ days.

Sensorlink Varcorder

Hot stick applied device for measuring and recording AMPS and power factor in order to calculate VARS.  It records readings every 15 minutes for 90+ days.  Information is downloaded via an infrared serial port.

Sensorlink Ampstick

Hot stick attached device for measuring current from 1—5000A with +1% accuracy on lines up to 500kv.

Sensorlink Ohmstick

Hot stick attached device for measuring the micro-ohm resistance of conductors, connectors, splices and switching devices.  It is a good predictor of future problems and replaces thermography.

Sensorlink Qualstick

Hot stick attached device for measuring current, true power factor, harmonic distortion and direction of current flow.  Ideal for determining where to place power factor correction devices.

HD ELECTRIC

HD Electric Overhead Ammeter Recorder
This recorder is a hot stick mountable, battery powered overhead line recorder that can record current & temperature on lines up to 69kv for up to 6 weeks.  Windows based software displays single and three phase loading profiles

HD Electric Meter Base Recorder
This voltage and current recorder is a compact four-channel meter base recorder for customer trouble shooting or end-of-line monitoring.  Records min., max. and average values for up to one year.  Windows based graphing software simplifies data analysis.

HD Electric HV Ammeters
Designed specifically for use on high voltage lines up to 69kv, it takes true RMS readings from 0—2000A with a digital readout.  Available with fork (used on overhead or underground cable) or hook head (used on overhead lines only).  Standard hot stick  attachment.

MORE MEASURING PRODUCTS

EDM HAS THE ANSWER TO PHASE IDENTIFICATION PROBLEMS

EDM’s phase tracker system (Avistar) can easily identify phase and phase angles in seconds.  It works on either overhead or underground lines from 120v to 500kv.  The AP-20 unit (an upgraded AP-30 unit is now being introduced) consists of a field unit, a reference unit and a hot stock unit.  The reference unit is installed at a substation and communicates via phone to the field unit and stores measurement readings.  The field unit receives readings from the hot stick unit over a FM wireless link and determines the phase angle.  The hot stock unit fits on a standard utility hot stick and touches energized parts to measure phases.  It compares zero-crossings with the reference unit and displays the results (A, B, C phase) and phase angle in degrees.  This system was originally developed by PNM (Public Service of New Mexico) and subsequently sold to EDM.

Colorado users including Tri-State are available for reference.

GE NOW OFFERS “EXTENDED RANGE” CT’s

General Electric has responded to customer requests for secondary CTs that cover a wider range of current with the same high accuracy level.  The new “Encompass” line of CTs means that a utility can dramatically reduce their inventory and be confident they will have a CT in stock when the need arises.  For example, instead of stocking  200:5, 400:5 and 800:5 CTs in stock, a utility only needs to stock a 500:5 unit (can replace up to 8 different CTs).  Specify a P/N 750 x 136651.  It will measure current with .3% accuracy from 40% to 400% of rated current.  They are available in both indoor & outdoor applications, standard and window type, single phase and poly-phase circuits.  They meet all IEEE and ANSI requirements.

See your WUE sales rep for more information.

GW  INTRODUCES A SINGLE PHASE VIPER RECLOSER

The same technology used for the GW three phase reclosers is now available in a single phase design.  It is available in ratings up to 27kv, 800A and works directly with the Schweitzer SEL—351 RS control.  It has multiple mounting configurations available for overhead, substation or pad-mount designs, and dead tank construction.  Comes preassembled with arresters and VTs.
