PVC CONDUIT AND CONDUCTOR PRICE INCREASE
Due to the middle east conflict, which has caused an increase in petroleum costs, we have been notified by our manufacturers that we can expect a substantial increase in the cost of PVC conduit and conductors in the near future. We will do everything in our power to keep you informed as the increase approaches.
OKONITE CABLE
Filled Strand Update
By: Jenifer Sima
Spring is finally here, and if you are planning any underground projects, Western United Electric is here to help you with your material requirements, including Okonite cable.
Western United has the largest inventory of Okonite stock in the United States. We currently have over 800,000' in stock, including 15KV, and 25KV cables in #2, 1/0, 4/0, 500 MCM, and 1000 KCMIL. We also stock Okonite cable in conduit.
Okonite is in the process of making a design change with their filled strand. Previously, the filled strand consisted of a semi-conducting EPR extruded over every strand except the last layer of stranding. The new strand fill is a water swellable powder. If the conductor gets wet, the powder will swell, and stop the migration of water. Cable 500 MCM, and larger will have a mastic applied to the seven (7) center strands, and the water swellable powder will be applied to the remaining strands. This transition from old to new filled strand technique will take place throughout 2003.
While Okonite continues to make manufacturing improvements, their EPR insulation remains unchanged for 30+ years. No other cable manufacturer can match the quality of the insulation, and the quantity of cable that is performing flawlessly throughout the country.
SouthWire
Triplex 600V Secondary UD SureSeal
Unique Cable Design with an Encapsulated Flowable Sealant. Sealant Provides Extended Cable Life After Minor Mechanical Cable Damage. Sealant also Provides Extended Cable Life when Pinholes are Caused by Voltage Surges.
APPLICATION
Used for secondary distribution and underground service at 600 volts or less, either directly buried or in ducts. Provides the best self-sealing cable design and materials for installations that are problematic due to potential installation damage, adjacent utility work damage, homeowner damage, or damage caused by voltage surges.
SPECIFICATIONS
SureSeal triplex 600 volt secondary UD cable meets or exceeds the following applicable specifications:
B-609 Aluminum 1350 round wire, annealed and intermediate tempers, for electrical purposes.
B-231 Aluminum 1350 Conductors, Concentric-Lay-Stranded.
B-786 19-Wire Combination Unilay-Stranded Aluminum 1350 Conductors for Subsequent Insulation.
CONSTRUCTION
Conductors are stranded, compressed 1350-H16/H26 aluminum, insulated with an inner layer of linear low-density unfilled cross-linked polyethylene bonded with an outer layer of black high-density cross-linked polyethylene. A sealant is strategically placed in the channels between the inner and outer layer. This cable design allows for cleaner striping, more uniform sealant disbursement in the cable, and the same or better shrinkback performance when compared with hi-score .
Carlon Schedule 40
Long Belled Utility Elbows
by Big Dog Dave Bauer
Carlon Schedule 40 Long Belled Utility Elbows are specifically designed for Power utility specifications - direct bury and concrete encased applications.
The long bell helps resist pullout during cold field bending and improves water-tightness by providing additional surface contact for solvent cement. Assembly is also made easier due to the improved alignment.
Carlon Long Belled Utility Elbows are nonmetallic and noncorrosive and are rated for 90° C conductors or cable.
They're available in diameter sizes 2" through 6" and 18-,24, 36-, and 48-inch radii and are approximately 1/2 the weight of metallic systems, thus saving installation time and freight charges.

HOMAC'S
Expansion Fitting
The W.E.S.T. department has been stocking substation bus fittings for five years now. We are pleased to see manufacturers making necessary changes to get universal fittings. HOMAC is now offering their expansion fitting with welded terminal pads. The great advantage is that you decide which direction the pad is aligned, and you take care of the welding.
